Presenting 2013 Single Vineyard Cabernets

Flora Springs Single Vineyards Release Announcement The Wine Advocate 95 Points St. Helena Rennie

2013 for many wineries in Napa and Sonoma has produced the finest wines I have tasted in 37 years. In fact, all of California has experienced a qualitative bonanza – 2011 better than generally reported, 2012 a superb vintage of flamboyant and dramatic, concentrated wines, 2013 a classic of power, intensity and equilibrium, and 2014 an endearing and charming vintage full of precocious and fruit-forward wines.” — Robert M. Parker, Jr.

For over thirty years we have served as stewards to our nine sustainably and organically farmed estate vineyards.

We know every corner of our land: and this identity of site dictates how we farm, and in turn, how we make our Single Vineyard Wines. These are truly elegant and powerful wines, that reflect the place from which they originate.

2013 Rutherford Hillside Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

One of their flagship wines is their 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Reserve Rutherford. This is an age-worthy collector’s item, and the 2013 is certainly one of the best they’ve produced to date. Dense ruby/purple with dusty/loamy notes in the background, oodles of red and blackcurrant fruit, there is high-quality toasty oak as a subtle component and a full-bodied richness. There is plenty of tannin still to resolve. The wine has great balance, impressive extract and richness. This is meant for 20-30 years of cellaring, but there’s no reason to defer your gratification given all the fruit it already offers.” — Robert M. Parker, Jr.

2013 St. Helena Rennie Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Another of their single-vineyard offerings that has a proven track record for long-term cellaring is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Rennie Reserve, which comes from holdings in St. Helena. This shows the valley’s beautiful crème de cassis fruit, nice judicious touch of toasty oak and licorice, full-bodied mouthfeel, and no hard edges. Tannins are present, but round and well-integrated. This is a full-bodied wine made for drinking over the next 20-25 years, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see it last longer.” — Robert M. Parker, Jr.

2013 Holy Smoke Cabernet Sauvignon

Our organically-farmed Holy Smoke vineyard sits just off the Oakville Crossroad in the heart of the Oakville appellation. This wine comes from a small parcel of the vineyard planted to the famous Cabernet Clone 4. The synergy between clone and vineyard site yields a single vineyard Cabernet that may be the most Bordeaux-like wine in our portfolio.

2013 Wild Boar Cabernet Sauvignon

The fruit for our Wild Boar Cabernet is from a single hillside block in our Cypress Ranch Vineyard in Pope Valley, a broad, sparsely populated valley just over Napa’s eastern mountain ridge. In keeping with the untamed character of this remote growing region and the marauding boars that seem to enjoy our grapes as much as we do, we’ve named this robust, highly-concentrated wine Wild Boar.

2013 Out of Sight Cabernet Sauvignon
Planted on an oak-laden hillside south of Napa Valley’s Stags Leap District along the Silverado Trail, our Out of Sight Vineyard is easily missed, hence its name. Today our organically farmed Out of Sight vineyard is one of our most treasured fruit sources.

On the Vine
The stellar 2013 vintage in Napa Valley began with a warm spring that brought early bud break and created superb conditions for flowering and fruit set. With the exception of one heat spike, summer temperatures were consistently in the zone for optimal vine activity resulting in notably healthy vines as fruit went through veraison and ripening. Harvest was early, and continued dry weather extended these ideal ripening conditions until the last grapes were picked.
