2021 Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Gift Pack
Crafted to capture the story of its site, each Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon label represents our family's journey in farming and the delicate part we play in navigating the forces of nature. Our Wild Boar symbolizes the animals that occasionally plunder our vineyards. The Holy Smoke symbolizes the dawn fog that fog lingers and the hills of the valley extend its stay. We call it “Holy Smoke,” as this ritual creates an ideal winegrowing climate and the Out of Sight symbolizes the birds of prey that keep our ecosystem in balance. These impressive assistants of nature prefer to work quietly and out of sight. Read more about the labels designed for this series.
Black cherry and brambly dark fruit mingle with notes of bittersweet chocolate, marshmallow and coconut. This is a broad, warmly textured wine, a Cabernet that coats the palate with pleasure and finishes long with fleshy tannins. Our 2021 Wild Boar is 100% sustainably-farmed Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from a small block in Proprietor John Komes’ home vineyard on the gently-sloping western hills of the Mayacamas Mountain range in the Rutherford AVA. The site, which backs up to a forest of Valley oaks, Live oaks, and coastal redwoods, has been in our family since 1977. Recent improvements to the vineyard include a redesign of its blocks to reflect soil differences, soil renewal and amendments, adjustments in irrigation applications and gentle pruning techniques. These enhancements can be felt in the character and purity of fruit from this vineyard, qualities which will only improve in the coming years.
Blueberries and plums glide across the palate, picking up cocoa nibs, licorice, vanilla bean and graham cracker along the journey. The texture is soft and supple, with elegant tannins befitting a wine made from grapes ripened in the daily rhythm of morning fog and afternoon sun. Our Fish Friendly Farming-certified Crossroads Vineyard sits in the heart of the Oakville appellation at the approximate center and widest part of Napa Valley. It derives its name in part from the smoke-like fog that lingers above the vines on summer mornings, lifting gradually as the sun heats the valley floor. The Holy Smoke Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a single, 3.3-acre block in the vineyard planted to Cabernet Clone 4. Bordering the seasonal Conn Creek, the soils here are a combination of Riverwash and Yolo loam. The synergy between clone and soils yields a beautifully-structured, mouth-filling Cabernet.
Warm and unctuous, this wine begins and ends with plush black fruit that glides across the palate, accompanied by notes of licorice, sassafras, coconut and marshmallow. Mature tannins bring the wine to a smooth finish that echoes long after your glass is empty. Located in the southeastern slopes of Napa Valley, the Out of Sight Vineyard rests between the Coombsville and Atlas Peak Appellations. The vineyard is Fish Friendly Farming Certified and blocks are farmed using both sustainable and CCOF certified farming practices. Our 2021 Out of Sight Cabernet Sauvignon comes from two small blocks that slope gently down from the Vaca range to the east. This slope coupled with the Haire loam soils create a uniform and consistently well-drained site, ideal conditions for growing rich, concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon.
