2023 Petit Verdot

Petit Verdot is often the quiet force behind our Bordeaux-style blend, Trilogy. But when given the spotlight—as it is here—it reveals remarkable depth and character.

New to Wine?

Petit Verdot is a bold, full-bodied red wine best enjoyed slightly below room temperature—around 60–65°F. Letting it breathe for 30–60 minutes, or simply swirling it in the glass, helps soften its firm tannins and release its deep aromas. Serve it in a wide-bowled red wine glass, and pair it with rich dishes like grilled meats, hearty pastas, or aged cheeses to bring out its full complexity. With just a little care, Petit Verdot becomes an incredibly rewarding wine to explore.

Tasting Notes

In the glass, this Petit Verdot reveals an inky, violet hue and an aromatic profile bursting with black plum, violet, and dark cherry, layered with lavender, graphite, and exotic spice. The palate is dense yet refined, with blackberry compote, bittersweet cocoa, and a touch of roasted espresso. Firm, finely knit tannins provide structure, while Rutherford’s signature earthy undertones—hints of dust, crushed rock, and dried sage—anchor the wine in place. The finish is long, textured, and savory, promising both immediate enjoyment and graceful aging potential.

Rutherford Wines

Grown in the heart of Rutherford, Napa Valley, this limited-production wine showcases the power and finesse that come from one of the region’s most revered appellations. The gravelly, well-drained soils of Rutherford bring structure and purity, while the valley’s warm days and cool nights allow for optimal ripening of this late-harvest varietal. The result is a bold, expressive wine with unmistakable presence.

Vintage

In 2023, Napa Valley experienced one of the longest growing seasons in a decade or more. Winter and spring rains led to full reservoirs and healthy, saturated soils; ideal conditions as grape growers headed into the peak growing months. With consistent, mild weather throughout the season, above-average crop yields, and extended hang time, 2023 was an exceptional, high-quality, and memorable vintage.
