"Love the land and it will love you back."—Flora Cabral Komes, 1911-2012
Our limited-production Flora’s Legacy wines are made in honor of Flora Komes, the woman who inspired the founding of Flora Springs Winery. With its etching of a crown, the bottle itself is a tribute to Flora, who was born in Hawaii and often told stories about family members being descended from Hawaiian royalty.
This Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc from the Crossroads Vineyard in Oakville is plush and full-bodied with softly sweet flavors of Comice pear and honeydew melon interwoven with notes of lychee nut, almond paste, French vanilla and crème brulee. The viscous, mouth-coating texture is balanced with bright acidity, but the lasting impression is warm and mellow. This is a delicate dessert wine can be aged or enjoyed now, and would pair beautifully with lemon meringue tartlets, angel food cake, almond-flecked cheesecake or brown butter shortbread cookies. It’s also a good match for soft, ripe cheeses such as Brie or Camembert with toasted pistachio nuts.
This unique and age-worthy wine is not produced every year—only when conditions in the vineyard are just right. Produced with grapes from our family’s Crossroads Vineyard in Oakville, this late harvest wine from the 2018 vintage came about when we noticed a few rows of Sauvignon Blanc vines affected by Botrytis cinerea, otherwise known as “noble rot,” the mold responsible for creating some of the world’s most celebrated dessert wines. We left these grapes on the vine until they reached 30° Brix, harvested and fermented them in stainless steel, and arrested the fermentation when the sugar and alcohol reached the levels we sought. We aged the wine in French oak barrels for five months prior to bottling.
